A 12-month undercover investigation by Merseyside Police resulted in him pleading guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to numerous counts of conspiring to supply guns and ammunition.
The court was told he used the kitchen of his home in Barford Road as a workshop which was strewn with gun parts.
So advanced were his engineering skills, he could transform miniature torches into guns which fired single bullets.
By twisting the torch as if to turn it on, the firing mechanism was activated and the bullet discharged.
Hampson looked stunned as Judge David Swift told him: "You present a serious risk.
"You have the expertise and experience enabling you to become involved in the supply of firearms and the substantial rewards derived from their trade.
"You are, in reality, a dealer in death."
